What Is Urology?
Urology is a surgical specialty which deals with diseases of the male and female urinary tract and the male reproductive organs. Although urology is classified as a surgical specialty, a knowledge of internal medicine, pediatrics, gynecology and other specialties is required by the urologist because of the wide variety of clinical problems encountered.

Although urology is classified as a surgical specialty, a knowledge of internal medicine, pediatrics, gynecology and other specialties is required by the urologist because of the wide variety of clinical problems encountered. In recognition of the wide scope of urology, the American Urological Association has identified seven subspecialty areas:
- Pediatric Urology
- Urologic Oncology (cancer)
- Renal Transplantation
- Male Infertility
- Calculi (urinary tract stones)
- Female Urology (urinary incontinence, pelvic outlet relaxation disorders)
- Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
- Neurourology (voiding disorders, urodynamic evaluation of patients and erectile dysfunction or impotence)

Dr. Samuel Trotter
Dr. Trotter and his wife, Kim, of 32 years relocated to North Alabama after living in Vermont for 28 years. They have four adult children, Jillian, Rachel, Joseph and Claire. The three younger children are in college. Dr. and Mrs. Trotter are both originally from a small town in Southern Illinois. Their relocation allows them to live closer to family as well as enjoy the amenities of Alabama, notably the warmer weather.
Dr. and Mrs. Trotter enjoy outdoor sports such as walking, hiking, and biking as well as spending time with their pets (especially their dog). They also enjoy traveling to visit their children who are spread across the country. Both are avid readers and enjoy Christian music. Oh, and they did leave their snow shoes and snow mobile in Vermont!
Dr. Trotter received his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from the University of Illinois in Urbana and graduated from the University Of Illinois, College Of Medicine, in Chicago. He completed his surgical internship at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago and then went on to complete his Urology residency training at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont. Dr. Trotter thus spent the next 25 years at the University Of Vermont College Of Medicine and its associated teaching Hospitals. He served in numerous roles at the university and recognized a full Professor of Surgery and served as Chairman of the Division of Urology for 15 years. Dr. Trotter has published multiple papers, peer reviewed journals, authored and co-authored book chapters and has given numerous lectures to students and residents. He has always had a special interest in teaching and education whether it be to medical students, patients, or the interested public.
Dr. Trotter is Board Certified in Urology and practices all facets of adult Urology with special interests in stone disease and cancer.
