Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) & Electromyography (EMG)

The recording of the velocity and amplitude of the compound action potentials of the sensory and motor nerves. Multiple nerves can be tested; while most nerves are mixed sensory and motor nerves, recording from a muscle means that the entire response is motor, and recording from a digit means that the entire response is sensory.

Electromyography (EMG)

EMG is the recording of electrical activity from the muscles. A needle contains a small electrode that records the extracellular potentials from the muscle. Therefore, the EMG makes a statement about the motor axons, but does not assess the sensory axons.

NCS & EMG

NCS and EMG are partnered for evaluation of the patient, and the specific subtest routines are determined by the examiner, usually a physician specializing in neurology.
